Haha i realised i'm very into the latest topics we're learning in sociology about culture and how it is translated into society. This quote by Banksy, a notorious vandal whose graffiti is pretty well known in the world. Who gets to decide what is art? It seems to be that the upper class, those with wealth, who get to define what art is by putting a price tag on it. By placing this price tag of say 1 million on a piece of art, that creates a divide such that regular people can't afford it, it becomes 'special' and 'noticed' and subsequently said to be 'appreciated'. Today we were discussing this in tutorial with the piece of 'Morals Versus Art: Censorship, The politics of Interpretation, and the Victorian Nude'. It's about the case of nude 'art' sold by two men who were from different classes, the only difference between them is their social standing and the fact that one sold art in a 5th avenue art gallery and the other, being a clerk, just sold it on the side. Guess who got prosecuted for pornography? Yes, it seems to be that art again as defined by those who put the price tag on it. Surely it cannot be that some people are 'blessed' with the ability to appreciate nudity as art without getting aroused? Haha it's very interesting really.
